Photoshop CS2, Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements 5 updates to address security vulnerabilities

Summary

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Photoshop CS2, Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements 5 that could allow an attacker who successfully exploits these potential vulnerabilities to take control of the affected system. A malicious BMP, DIB, RLE, or PNG must be opened in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements by the user for an attacker to exploit these potential vulnerabilities. Users are recommended to update their installations with the patches provided below, and Adobe encourages all customers to be cautious before opening any unknown file, regardless of which application they may be using.

Solution

Adobe recommends all Photoshop CS2, Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements 5 users update their installations using the instructions below:

Photoshop CS3 Updaters:

Photoshop CS3 customers can use the Macintosh or Windows updaters to update their installations:

• CS3 Update for Macintosh
• CS3 Update for Windows

Photoshop CS3 users can also utilize the product's automatic update facility. The default installation configuration runs automatic updates on a regular schedule, and can be manually activated by choosing Help > Check For Updates Now.

Manual update instructions for Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop CS3 Macintosh:

1. Download the updated file ps_security_update.dmg
2. Exit Photoshop CS2 and/or CS3.
3. In the Finder, navigate to the following location(s):
   • For CS3: Applications//Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins/File Formats
   • For CS2: BMP & TARGA: Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins/File Formats;  PNG: Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS2/Plug-Ins/Adobe Photoshop Only/File Formats
4. Move the existing plug-ins to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep these original versions in case you need to revert back.
5. Copy the BMP, PNG, and Targa plug-ins from the download into the same folder as in Step 3.
6. Launch Photoshop CS2 or Photoshop CS3.

Manual update instructions for Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop CS3 Windows:

1. Download the updated file ps_security_update.zip
2. Exit Photoshop.
3. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the following location(s):
   • For CS3: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\File Formats;
   • For CS2: BMP & TARGA: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\File Formats; PNG: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats
4. Move the existing plug-ins to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep these original versions in case you need to revert back.

1. Download the updated file ps_security_update.zip
2. The ps_security_update.zip needs to be uncompressed. You can use the utility built into Windows or some other tool, such as WinZip. Choose to extract the files to a location you’ll remember, such as a new folder on your desktop.
3. Exit Photoshop Elements 5.0.
4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats folder. Move the Bmp.8bi and Targa.8bi files already in this folder to a new location, such as another new folder on your desktop (you may want to name this folder something like “old elements 5 plug-ins”). Ensure that you keep these original versions in case you need to revert back.
5. Move or copy the new Bmp.8bi and Targa.8bi files that you extracted in Step 3 to the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats folder.
6. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins\Editor Only\File Formats folder. Move the Png.8bi file already in this folder to the folder containing your other older plug-ins.
7. Move the Png.8bi file that you extracted in Step 3 to the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0\Plug-Ins\Editor Only\File Formats folder.
8. Open Photoshop Elements 5.0.

Photoshop CS3 users can also utilize the product's automatic update facility. The default installation configuration runs automatic updates on a regular schedule, and can be manually activated by choosing Help > Check For Updates Now.

Details

Multiple input validation errors have been identified in Photoshop CS2, Photoshop CS3, and Photoshop Elements which could lead to the potential execution of arbitrary code. These vulnerabilities are not remotely exploitable, but could, for instance, be triggered by opening a malicious BMP, DIB, RLE or PNG file delivered to a user via their e-mail client. Users are recommended to update their installations with the patches provided below, and Adobe encourages all customers to be cautious before opening any unknown file, regardless of which application they may be using. These issues were previously publicly disclosed by a third party (CVE-2007-2244 and CVE-2007-2365).

Description	Marsu has discovered a vulnerability in Adobe Photoshop, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system. The vulnerability is caused due to an error within the BMP.8BI Photoshop Format Plugin when handling Bitmap files (e.g. .BMP, .DIB, .RLE). This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted Bitmap file. Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code. The vulnerability is confirmed in Adobe Photoshop CS2 and reportedly affects Adobe Photoshop CS3. Other versions may also be affected.
